Istanbul can fill weeks on its own, but a day out of the city shows another side of the region: car-free islands, the first Ottoman capital, a border town with a masterpiece mosque and quiet Black Sea beaches. Here are the trips that work best in a single day, with honest travel times.

The Princes’ Islands

A chain of islands in the Sea of Marmara, about 1 to 1½ hours by public ferry from Kabataş, Eminönü or Bostancı. Büyükada, the largest, has wooden Ottoman mansions, pine woods and a hilltop monastery; there are no private cars, so you walk, cycle or take the small electric shuttles. Go on a weekday: summer weekends are crowded.

The whole Bosphorus by ferry

The long Bosphorus ferry from Eminönü zigzags between Europe and Asia up to Anadolu Kavağı, near the Black Sea, with a stop of a few hours for lunch and the walk up to the Genoese Yoros Castle. It is the cheapest and most relaxed way to see the waterfront palaces, villages and fortresses of the strait.

Bursa

The first capital of the Ottoman Empire, about 2 to 2½ hours away by fast ferry and road. See the Green Mosque and Green Tomb, the Grand Mosque with its twenty domes, the silk bazaar of Koza Han and the tombs of the first sultans; Bursa is also the home of İskender kebab. In winter, Uludağ above the city is a ski resort.

Edirne

Near the Greek and Bulgarian borders, about 2½ to 3 hours by road, Edirne was the Ottoman capital before Istanbul. Its Selimiye Mosque, built by the architect Sinan and listed by UNESCO, is often called his masterpiece. Add the old bazaars and the Ottoman bridges over the Tunca. It is a long day; leave early.

Şile and Ağva on the Black Sea

About 1½ to 2 hours from the centre, on the Asian side. Şile has a lighthouse, a small castle and long sandy beaches; Ağva is a riverside village between two streams, good for a boat ride and fish lunch. A summer escape from the city heat.

Further: better as an overnight

  • Troy and Gallipoli: five hours or more each way; far better with a night in Çanakkale.

  • Safranbolu: an Ottoman town of timber houses, about five hours away; our Off the Beaten Path journey stays the night.

  • Cappadocia: possible as a day trip by plane, but rushed and tiring; give it at least two nights. See our Cappadocia guide.

Tips

  • Public ferries are cheap and frequent; buy an Istanbulkart for ferries, trams and the metro.

  • Avoid Sundays and public holidays for the islands and the Black Sea coast.

  • Keep day trips for the end of your stay, after the essentials in the city: our Istanbul guide explains how many days to plan.
