The best time to visit Turkey for a classic tour of Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Aegean is April to June and September to October: warm days, cool evenings and sites without the summer crowds. July and August are for the coast, and winter suits Istanbul and the snowy valleys of Cappadocia. Turkey is a large country with several climates, so the right month depends on where you are going.

The short answer

  • Touring several regions: mid-April to June, September to October.

  • Beach and sea: June to September on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts; the water stays warm into October.

  • Istanbul city break: all year; spring and autumn are the most comfortable.

  • Eastern Turkey: April to May and October, avoiding the heat of summer and the cold of winter.

  • Snow and winter light: December to February in Cappadocia.

Turkey by season

Spring (March to May)

Wildflowers in Cappadocia, tulips in Istanbul’s parks in April, and comfortable temperatures for long site visits at Ephesus or Pergamon. March can still be cold and wet inland; from mid-April the weather settles. This is our favourite season for a first trip.

Summer (June to August)

Hot and dry almost everywhere. Istanbul is warm and humid, with highs often near 30 °C; the coast around Antalya regularly passes 35 °C and the sea is at its warmest. Inland ruins are best visited early in the morning. Summer is high season on the coast and during the school holidays.

Autumn (September to November)

The sea is still warm in September and October, the light is golden and grape harvests begin in Cappadocia and the Aegean. Crowds thin after mid-September. November turns cooler and rainier, but Istanbul remains pleasant.

Winter (December to February)

Istanbul is cool and often rainy, with occasional snow; museums are quiet. Cappadocia becomes a white landscape under blue skies, with nights well below freezing. The coast is mild but most beach resorts are closed. Winter tours are calm, good value and atmospheric.

Region by region

Istanbul

A year-round city. April to early June and September to November are the most comfortable for walking; July and August bring long evenings by the Bosphorus. More in our Istanbul travel guide.

Cappadocia

At about 1,000 metres, Cappadocia has a continental climate: hot days and cool nights in summer, cold and snowy winters. Balloon flights are most regular from April to October and are cancelled more often in winter. Read our Cappadocia travel guide and our hot air balloon guide.

The Aegean and Mediterranean coast

Ephesus, Pamukkale, Antalya and the Turquoise Coast around Fethiye. May, June, September and October are ideal for combining ruins and swimming; July and August are for the beach, with strong midday heat at Pamukkale and Ephesus.

Eastern and Southeastern Turkey

Göbeklitepe, Mount Nemrut, Mardin and Lake Van sit far inland and partly at altitude. Summer is very hot in the southeast, often above 40 °C in Şanlıurfa, and winter is harsh around Van. Spring and October are the windows we use; see our Eastern Turkey itinerary.

Holidays to plan around

Ramadan and the two religious holidays, Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı, move about eleven days earlier each year. Sites stay open during Ramadan, but during the bayram holidays domestic travel peaks, flights and coastal hotels fill up and some shops close. Mosques also pause visits during prayer times, especially at Friday midday. We check these dates for every departure.
